The Stepclever Business Neighbourhoods project aims to make Stepclever areas safer and cleaner so that businesses want to stay or start up in the area. One of the project’s themes is provided by Waste Enforcement who seek to supply environmental improvements for businesses, predominantly by ensuring they have suitable Trade Waste contracts for removal of their commercial waste. However, other elements of environmental crime are assessed and improved where necessary, such as litter, flytipping, dog fouling, graffiti. Recycling advice is also given to help businesses minimize their waste as much as possible.
To date, 200 businesses have been inspected and complied with suitable Trade Waste contracts, 70 businesses have benefited from enhanced environmental conditions, and 30 have signed up for a Tidy Business Award.
Sefton Council, in partnership with Encams, part of the Keep Britain Tidy Group is looking to recognise businesses who take responsibility for their trade waste and their local environment by presenting them with either a Bronze, Silver or Gold award.
This initiative is free to all businesses that want to apply.
Businesses can qualify for these awards and will receive the following benefits;
· Free Press Publicity in your papers
· Recognition of your environmental commitments
· Nationally recognised certificate to display in business
· Recognition within your local community.
To qualify for these awards it could not be easier, and is designed to fit in with the normal day-to-day running of a business. A dedicated Stepclever Officer audits all businesses and completes all necessary paperwork. The audit process takes around 30 minutes to complete.
Businesses who have a current Trade Waste Contract could already be well on the way to qualifying for the Bronze Award or have provisions in place to work towards a higher Award by recycling and reducing trade waste or supporting the local community with environmental initiatives.
Last year, ten businesses signed up, with two receiving a Silver Award and eight receiving a Bronze Award. This year, another twenty businesses have signed up, with four receiving a Silver Award and a further sixteen receiving a Bronze Award.
