The Stepclever Juice FM ‘Tenner Tycoon’ Challenge reached its climax on Friday as the winners were announced live on air during the Juice FM breakfast show. Competition has been fierce as teams of year eight students from each of the seven Stepclever Schools battled it out to prove that they are the young entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
The teams, each consisting of four students, had been given £10 each and the chance to grow the team total of £40 into as much money as possible over a ten day period. The two teams who reached today’s final were Alsop High School from Walton and Savio Salesian College in Bootle and it was Alsop High who emerged the winners having turned their £40 into a whopping £1047.36.
Students have kept video diaries and provided regular updates to Juice and recorded podcasts of their experience throughout the two weeks of the competition. They have also have been appearing live on air on the Juice FM Breakfast Show to update listeners across Merseyside on their progress.
Mark Thomas, Stepclever Business and Enterprise Champion said ‘All of the schools have done fantastically well and the students involved have shown amazing entrepreneurial spirit over the last ten days.’
Alsop grew their money through a Golden Ticket style competition. Every class in the school had the opportunity to enter, but had to raise £25 or more to do so. Each class that entered the competition was then given a golden ticket and put into a prize draw. If their ticket was drawn out then that class was a winner. The students in that class were then given a chocolate bar each – 4 of the chocolate bars also had golden tickets inside which represented a winning prize for that lucky student. Prizes included a Nintendo Wii, ipod touch and vouchers. Students gave presentations to staff and other pupils to promote the competition.
Savio Salesian College, the runners up held a variety of events over the last ten days including a ‘guess the name of the teddy’ competition, school raffle, and a cake sale. Savio students have been extremely enterprising with their sales and marketing strategy. They targeted a business women’s networking event during enterprise week, visited business neighbours Alliance and Leicester, and made sure that staff and pupils including 6th formers were aware of the Tenner Tycoon Competition.
Lorna Rogers, Project Manager at Stepclever Tomorrows Enterprising Workforce said ‘The Tenner Tycoon Challenge provided an excellent learning opportunity for young people to develop their enterprise skills. Students had to make difficult decisions, work as a team, be creative, determined and show entrepreneurial spirit. All of the schools involved exceeded our expectations, highlighting the future business talent in our local young people.’
The winning team have won a laptop for their school and Iphone apiece whilst the runners up each won an Ipod.
